One Room Challenge Week 2 – Girl’s Bedroom Design

It’s the second week of the One Room Challenge. I’m working on an updated girl’s bedroom design for my nine year old daughter. My goal is a slightly more grown up style infused with plenty of fun because I don’t want her growing up too fast! I’m also planning some new storage systems to help keep her room organized. You can check out all the before pictures in this post.

Ideas to update a girl's bedroom.

The existing furniture is working well for the most part. As far as the bed, dresser and desk go, we’re in good shape. She currently has two small Ikea shelving units that store books and toys. I’d like to exchange these for a larger unit for her books and incorporate toy storage into the closet system. I’m on the hunt for new bedding and window treatments. I’ve been on the lookout for wall decor too. The to-do list is long, but apart from the closet and painting the walls, it’s not too labor-intensive. read more

One Room Challenge Week 1 – Girl’s Bedroom

I’ve gone back and forth about launching into another One Room Challenge, but I finally decided to go for it. My daughter has been asking to change up her room since the beginning of the summer. I casually mentioned in passing that maybe we should paint her room, and she’s since launched a full scale campaign. The ORC is the perfect opportunity to push through plans for an updated girl’s bedroom design.During this round of the One Room Challenge, I'm updating my daughter's bedroom with a slightly more grown-up design. My daughter is nine years old now and in the fourth grade. Overnight it feels like she’s started shying away from anything remotely childish. No more hearts or butterflies on her clothes. She wants to watch tv shows that “aren’t so babyish.” Most of all, she wants the space she calls her own to be as grown up as she feels. Excuse me for a minute while I have a complete breakdown. Though I would love for her to be a child for as long as possible, I also remember what it’s like to want to feel grown up, and at nine, there are only so many ways you can do that. read more

DIY Pelmet Box

Lately I’ve been working on a few projects to spruce up the nursery. A while ago, I posted very early pictures of the nursery when all we had done was paint the walls a cream color and put together the furniture. Obviously we’ve done far more than that over the almost two years that we’ve had our daughter, but getting it to look like the picture in my head has taken much longer.

One of my least favorite parts of the room is the window. It’s actually a nice big window with an inset frame that will someday be perfect for a bench or some low shelves. Because of the configuration of the room, the window is partially blocked by the glider where we sit and read before naps and bedtime. The other big problem is the curtains and the horrendous sheet hanging to help darken the room. See for yourself… read more
